Comparing pictures


Dear students,

Today we are going to practice for our speaking exam. I think this picture describes quite well what a pictures description should look like.

Task 1: First you are going to read this and try to learn all the phases by heart and remember some expressions from each phase.

A picture description consists of 4 phases:




Phase 1: Describing the picture

  • What do you see in the picture?
  • Where is it happening?
  • What are they doing?
  • How does the photo make you feel like?

 Phase 2: Compare and contrast

  • The pictures are similar because ... they both show...
  • In picture A we can see ______, while in picture we can see ______. 
  • The pictures are different because..., while picture B shows...
  • Another difference is that ...
  • I think that ...

  Phase 3: Speculate about the picture

  • He seems to be...
  • He appears to be...
  • Use the verb to be if you are 100% certain that something is true.
  • He/she must... (95% certainty)
  • He/she may/might/could ...(50% certainty)

Phase 4: Give your reaction

  • I'd love / hate to do that!
  • It looks great / dangerous / awful!
  • It makes me want to try it. 
  • It wouldn't be my sport, because...
