A for and against essay

Dear students,

In our next exam we are going to write a for and against essay. The instructions to follow are displayed on page 50-51 and you have a model on page 160.

Rules to follow to succeed at writing a for and against essay

1. Start each paragraph with a word or phrase so that the reader knows what to expect, for example, firstly, on the one hand/on the other hand, to sum up.
2. Link your sentences with connectors of addition or contrast so that the readers can follow your text.

• Connectors of addition: also, as well as, in addition, furthermore, moreover.
• Connectors of contrast:  on the one hand/on the other hand, but, however, nevertheless, while, although/ven though and despite/in spite of.

      3. The structure is quite simple, so stick to it and you won't make so many mistakes.

• PARAGRAPH 1: An introduction
• PARAGRAPH 2: Arguments in favour of the issue.
• PARAGRAPH 3: Arguments against the issue.
• PARAGRAPH 4: A conclusion or summary and the author's opinion.

     4. Take the essay from the picture as a model.
