In our next exam we are going to write a for and against essay. The instructions to follow are displayed on page 50-51 and you have a model on page 160.
Rules to follow to succeed at writing a for and against essay
- Start each paragraph with a word or phrase so that the reader knows what to expect, for example, firstly, on the one hand/on the other hand, to sum up.
- Link your sentences with connectors of addition or contrast so that the readers can follow your text.
- Connectors of addition: also, as well as, in addition, furthermore, moreover.
- Connectors of contrast: on the one hand/on the other hand, but, however, nevertheless, while, although/ven though and despite/in spite of.
- PARAGRAPH 1: An introduction
- PARAGRAPH 2: Arguments in favour of the issue.
- PARAGRAPH 3: Arguments against the issue.
- PARAGRAPH 4: A conclusion or summary and the author's opinion.
