Present Perfect VS past simple


TASK

In this unit we are learning the difference between the present perfect and the past simple. Read this short explanation for our next lesson and watch the video about the differences between these tenses.  

Present perfect

USE

We generally use the past simple to talk about actions in the past without a time reference.

STRUCTURE




TIME EXPRESSIONS

Since (a specific time reference) / for ( a period of time or duration)

I have learned English for 5 years
I have learned English since 2011

already (affirmatives: ya) / yet (negatives and questions: todavía)

I have already visited my mum.
I haven't visited my mum yet. 
Have you visited your mum yet?

Just (a moment ago)

I have just come back from the supermarket.

Ever (for negatives and questions) / never (for affirmatives)

Examples: 
I have never been in Paris.
I haven't ever been in Paris.
Have you ever been in Paris?

Others

Lately, once, recently.
